Cartwheel in Gymnastics: A Guide to Do It Properly
04 Sep 2024

Cartwheel gymnastics is one of the most important skills every aspiring gymnast should master. Not only does it build a strong foundation for more advanced moves, but it also helps develop balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.

If you're a beginner or looking to refine your form, understanding the proper technique is crucial. This guide will walk you through the steps to perform a cartwheel properly, offering tips and advice to ensure you perfect this skill.

Step-by-Step Guide to Performing a Cartwheel

Ever wondered how gymnasts effortlessly perform those graceful cartwheels? Mastering this fundamental skill isn’t just about agility, but it’s a blend of technique and practice. Let’s break down the steps to help you nail the perfect cartwheel in gymnastics:

1. Find an Open Area

Before attempting a cartwheel, ensure you have a clear and open space free from obstacles. A gymnastics mat or a soft, flat surface is ideal for practicing to minimize the risk of injury.

Position yourself in the center of the area, allowing ample room to execute the cartwheel without any obstructions.

2. Start in a Lunge Position

Begin the cartwheel by standing with your feet together in an upright position. Take a small step forward with your dominant foot, positioning it slightly in front of the other foot.

This initial movement sets up a lunge position, which provides stability and helps in generating momentum for the cartwheel. Keep your arms relaxed by your sides or slightly raised, preparing for the next steps.

3. Lever and Place Hands on the Ground

Transition smoothly from the lunge position into a lever motion. Extend both arms upwards towards the ceiling or sky, reaching as high as possible.

This upward movement not only prepares your body for the cartwheel but also helps in achieving height and balance during the execution.

As you complete the lever, swiftly bring both arms down and place your dominant hand firmly on the ground.

Position your hand slightly in front of your shoulder and ensure your fingers point towards the direction you intend to move during the cartwheel.

4. Kick Feet Over Head

With your dominant hand securely placed on the ground, initiate the cartwheel by kicking your dominant leg (the leg that was in front during the lunge) upwards and over your body.

This kicking motion is crucial as it propels your body into the air and initiates the rotational movement of the cartwheel. Aim to extend your leg fully to achieve maximum height and form during the cartwheel.

Simultaneously, push off gently with your non-dominant leg to help rotate your body sideways.

5. Back Leg Contacts Ground

As your dominant leg completes its arc over your body, the non-dominant leg, which was initially supporting your body's weight, should now follow through to contact the ground.

Aim to land your non-dominant leg first, maintaining a controlled descent to ensure stability and balance. This sequential landing helps in maintaining momentum and fluidity throughout the cartwheel movement.

6. Lever Again

Upon completing the cartwheel movement, transition smoothly into a lever motion once more. Extend both arms upwards towards the sky or ceiling, mirroring the initial lever motion before executing the cartwheel.

This second lever helps in stabilizing your body and preparing for the landing phase of the cartwheel. Keep your arms extended and aligned with your shoulders to maintain balance and control throughout the movement.

7. Landing in Lunge Position

Conclude the cartwheel by landing in a controlled lunge position. As your non-dominant leg contacts the ground, follow through by bringing your dominant leg down to complete the movement.

Maintain a deep lunge position with your front knee bent at approximately a 90-degree angle, ensuring stability and balance upon landing.

Keep your arms extended to the sides or by your ears to aid in balance and maintain proper form throughout the landing phase.

Cartwheel Drills to Improve Technique

Improving your cartwheel technique involves targeted drills that focus on strength, flexibility, and coordination. Here are several effective drills to help you enhance your cartwheel skills:

A. Cartwheel over the Cartwheel Block

Practice performing cartwheels over a low cartwheel block. This drill helps improve height, precision, and timing during the cartwheel execution.

It encourages you to focus on lifting your body and extending your legs fully over the block, enhancing your overall cartwheel technique.

B. Cartwheel on the Cartwheel Mat

Utilize a cartwheel-specific mat designed to provide cushioning and support during practice. This drill allows you to execute cartwheels with confidence, focusing on form and technique without concerns about impact.

The mat helps in refining your cartwheel motion by offering a stable surface for repetitive practice.

C. Cartwheel From a Knee

Begin the cartwheel from a kneeling position to emphasize proper hand placement and weight distribution.

This drill enhances body awareness and control, helping you understand the pivotal role of your hands in initiating and guiding the cartwheel movement. It also aids in building strength in your upper body and core.

D. Cartwheel on a Foam Training Beam

Perform cartwheels on a foam training beam to enhance balance, stability, and alignment. The foam surface challenges your proprioception and requires greater control during the cartwheel execution.

This drill improves your ability to maintain a straight body line and precise hand-to-foot coordination.

E. Cartwheel on a Line on the Floor

Execute cartwheels along a straight line marked on the floor to refine alignment and trajectory. This drill encourages you to maintain a straight path during the cartwheel, promoting accuracy and consistency in your technique.

It helps in developing spatial awareness and precision in landing, crucial for mastering advanced gymnastic maneuvers.
