18 Sep 2024

In pickleball, there are several techniques that you must learn to get points. One of those techniques is dinking. Dinking is a crucial skill in pickleball that can make a significant difference in your game.

This soft shot which usually is executed with finesse, can turn the tide of a match. Dinking is a powerful weapon in breaking the flow of the game and making the opponent follow the flow of the game that we make.

There are many people who use this technique, even athletes. To learn it further, let’s check this out!

What is Dinking in Pickleball?

Dinking is a soft and controlled shot that lands just over the net in the non-volley zone (kitchen). Unlike powerful smashes or volleys, dinks are intended to keep the ball low and make it difficult for opponents to attack.

The main goal of dinking is to prolong the rally, forcing errors from your opponents and creating opportunities for you to gain the upper hand.

Dinking Strategies

There are several strategies you can employ when dinking. To practice dinking, it requires good control in practice, in addition to the right position. Here are other strategies:

1. Control and Patience

Dinking requires a high level of control and patience. The aim is not to win the point outright but to set up a more advantageous position. By keeping the ball low and close to the net, you limit your opponent's ability to hit aggressive shots.

Focus on maintaining a soft touch and precise placement. Use a relaxed grip on your paddle to absorb the impact of the ball and ensure a gentle return.

2. Consistency

Consistency is key in dinking. Being able to hit multiple consecutive dinks without making an error puts pressure on your opponents and increases the chances of them making a mistake.

Practice dinking repeatedly with a partner or against a wall. Aim to keep each shot low and within the non-volley zone.

3. Movement and Positioning

Good positioning is essential for effective dinking. Stay close to the non-volley zone line, allowing you to react quickly to your opponent's shots and maintain control over the rally.

Keep your feet active and be prepared to move side-to-side. Maintain a low stance to stay balanced and ready to execute precise dinks.

Where to Hit the Dink

When hitting a dink shot, sometimes it may be difficult for some players to determine where to hit. Even though there are several good shot directions to open up opportunities to get points. Here's where to hit dink:

A. Cross-Court Dinks

Cross-court dinks are the most common and effective type of dink shot. Hitting the ball diagonally across the court provides more margin for error and forces your opponent to cover more ground.

Aim for the corner of the non-volley zone on your opponent's side. This shot is challenging to attack and can create openings for you to take control of the rally.

B. Straight Dinks

Straight dinks are directed straight ahead into the opponent's non-volley zone. These shots can catch your opponent off guard, especially if they are expecting a cross-court shot.

Use straight dinks sparingly to keep your opponent guessing. Ensure the ball lands low and close to the net to prevent easy returns.

C. Middle Dinks

Dinking to the middle of the court can be effective in doubles play. Targeting the area between your opponents can cause confusion and miscommunication, leading to errors.

Aim for the middle of the non-volley zone where neither opponent has a clear advantage. This strategy can disrupt their rhythm and create opportunities for you to attack.

How to Dink in Pickleball

To learn dink, it requires several steps and techniques in order to produce the perfect dink. Here's how to dink in pickleball:

1. Grip and Paddle Position

Use a continental grip (also known as the “shake hands grip”) for dinking. Hold the paddle lightly to allow for better control and feel. The paddle face should be slightly open, angled upwards to lift the ball over the net.

2. Stance and Footwork

Adopt a balanced and low stance with your knees slightly bent. Position yourself close to the non-volley zone line, keeping your weight on the balls of your feet for quick movements.

3. Swing and Follow Through

The dink shot requires a short and controlled swing. Keep your wrist firm but relaxed, and use your shoulder to guide the paddle. Aim to make contact with the ball in front of your body and follow through gently towards the net.

4. Focus on Contact Point

Hit the ball with a smooth and controlled motion. The contact point should be low and in front of your body, allowing you to lift the ball over the net with minimal force.

Place targets on the court and practice hitting dinks to specific spots. This drill will help you develop precision and control in your dinking game. Additionally, you can also try other several pickleball drills to get maximum results.
