Mastering Pickleball Backhand

To master the backhand pickleball shot, a strong foundation is needed. These include grip, stance and body position, body swing and footwork. Here's the explanation:

1. Grip

Pickleball Backhand Grip

The Eastern Backhand Grip positions the paddle handle diagonally across your palm, with your index finger’s knuckle on the top edge and thumb against the back. The Continental Grip aligns the V of your thumb and index finger with the paddle’s edge, offering versatility and natural wrist motion.

The Two-Handed Backhand Grip uses both hands on the handle, with the dominant index finger extended and the non-dominant hand providing stability. While the Eastern Grip is solid, many players also prefer the Continental Grip.

2. Stance and Body Positioning

To maintain stability and agility at the kitchen line, ensure you're in a ready position with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and weight centered near the middle of your feet, but not on your toes. Utilizing a fixed split step will further enhance your readiness.

Additionally, adopt a slightly deeper knee bend to accommodate the upward movement of your shot. For optimal arm mechanics, keep your dominant arm closer to your body than usual for this particular shot.

3. Body Swing

To execute a backhand shot, begin with a backswing by rotating your shoulders and hips away from the net while extending your non-dominant arm for balance.

As the ball nears, rotate your hips and shoulders back towards the net and move the paddle forward smoothly, striking the ball slightly in front of you.

Finish with a follow-through, continuing the paddle’s motion towards your target and ensuring it ends high and to the side for control and consistency.

4. Footwork

For a backhand shot in pickleball, proper footwork involves positioning yourself efficiently to strike the ball. Begin by adopting a balanced stance with feet shoulder-width apart and weight distributed evenly.

As the ball approaches, use a small step or pivot to align your body with the shot. Move your front foot slightly ahead if using a closed stance or keep your feet parallel for an open stance, adjusting your weight as needed.

Ensure quick, controlled movements to position yourself correctly and maintain stability for a powerful and accurate backhand.

How to Execute of the Backhand

To execute a backhand shot, start by selecting the appropriate grip—Eastern, Continental, or Two-Handed Backhand. Assume a stance suited to your preference and the shot situation, whether neutral, closed, or open.

Rotate your shoulders and hips away from the net for the backswing, then use the Step-and-Drag or Pivot-and-Rotate technique to move forward and generate power.

As you swing forward, rotate your body towards the net and strike the ball slightly in front of you with a controlled motion. Finish the shot by following through with the paddle, ensuring it continues towards your target and ends high and to the side.

Common Mistakes When Do Pickleball Backhand

Backhand is indeed a difficult technique to master, so it's no wonder that many mistakes often occur when practicing it. Here are several common mistakes that often occur:

A. Incorrect Grip Pressure

Over-gripping or under-gripping the paddle can affect control and accuracy. Maintain a relaxed but firm grip to ensure a balanced shot.

B. Poor Stance

A misaligned stance can lead to imbalance and ineffective shots. Ensure you have a stable stance, with feet shoulder-width apart and weight evenly distributed.

C. Late Contact

Striking the ball too late can result in poor placement. Position yourself to make contact with the ball slightly in front of your body for better control.

D. Over-Swinging

Excessive swinging can reduce accuracy and control. Focus on a smooth, controlled swing rather than trying to generate too much power.

E. Inadequate Follow-Through

Incomplete follow-through can impact shot effectiveness. Complete the swing with a smooth and natural motion, ensuring the paddle finishes high and to the side.
